50 Wildfires This Week
49 In Western Washington
OLYMPIA, WA – Washington has seen a “perfect storm” of fire activity this week, resulting in 50 wildfires so far in the state. A meteorologist for the Washington Department of Natural Resources says weather conditions combined with abundant dead and dormant grasses and shrubs led to the onslaught of blazes.
49 of the fires were in western Washington and one was in the Yakima Valley. All were contained relatively quickly.
Washington Commissioner of Public Lands Hillary Franz tweeted yesterday that she’s working with the legislature to get more funding for fire fighting. She says crews were able to keep these fires from spreading too much, but going into late spring and summer, the DNR will need more resources to keep communities safe.
