WA Drought Declaration
2.5 Washington Counties
OLYMPIA, WA – Governor Jay Inslee signed a drought declaration yesterday for three Washington counties. Methow and Okanagan Counties are in the affected area, as is the upper area of Yakima County. Many of the high-value crops for the state, like apples, wine grapes, and pears are grown in those areas.
Though still early in the spring, the state Ecology Department Director says it’s time to start preparing for potential water shortages in those locations.
In a press release, the Governor’s message admitted that much of the state has “significant snow”, but says climate change is responsible for the drought in these three areas.
