Law Makes Smoking Age 21
OLYMPIA, WA – You’ll have to be 21 to light up in Washington State next year. Governor Jay Inslee signed a law that raises the minimum age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21.
Governor Inslee said “We know the risks associated with tobacco and nicotine. We know how much easier it is to prevent our children from becoming addicted in the first place than to treat the addiction later in life, or even worse, to treat the cancers and dieases caused by these products.”
The Senate passed the bill last Wednesday, two days before Inslee signed it. This is the sixth time legislators have considered the bill.
The law takes effect on January 1st 2020.
