Shooter’s Name Released In Yesterday’s Action

LEWISTON, ID – Daniel T. Cook, Jr. died in a shootout with Lewiston Police Officers yesterday.  The Idaho State Police have released the information on yesterday’s activities in the Orchards. 

The press release says at about 4:00 pm, Cook drove to the home of Nez Perce Tribal Police Officer Josh Rigney and shot him twice.  Rigney is in fair condition today at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

After firing at Rigney, he got back in his car and left the scene.  LPD Officers quickly picked up the pursuit.  The release says Cook shot at police from his car in the areas of the 3300 block of 8th Street, at 8th Street and Bryden Avenue, and the 1100 block of Burrell Avenue.

Cook continued to shoot at LPD Officers on Burrell at the fairgrounds.  LPD Officers returned his fire, resulting in Cook’s death. 

Four LPD Officers are on special leave by the department as standard policy for their involvement.

The Idaho State Police is investigating the incident with the help of the Critical Incident Task Force made up of the Moscow PD, Latah County Sheriff’s Office, and the FBI.

Update:  This story has been updated to include the suspect's middle initial.  The ISP sent an update just after noon today adding that information.
