Fish & Game: Don't Mistake It For Black Bear During Hunting Season

KAMIAH, ID – Idaho Fish & Game Officers are warning hunters to be vigilant after a grizzly bear was spotted last week.  A hunter saw it in the Kelly Creek drainage area.  Kelly Creek leads into the North Fork of the Clearwater River northeast of Kamiah.

The bear has been identified as a two-year-old that the Fish & Wildlife Service released with a collar in western Montana last July.

Black bear season is open in the hunting unit where the grizzly was seen.  There is no grizzly season in Idaho.

This isn’t the first time a grizzly has been spotted in the Kelly Creek area.   In 2007 a hunter was in that area, mistook a grizzly for a black bear, and shot it.

This specific Grizzly was last tracked by its collar June 12th near Kellogg, ID before it was spotted on the 13th in the Kelly Creek drainage.
