“Buy local” what does that mean to you? Online shopping seems to be the new way of the world. Even when it comes to larger priced items like recreational vehicles, there is an excitement and convenience to having access to options up for sale over the country. With the internet, there are so many options at your fingertips. But, when you’re in a small community such as the Lewis Clark Valley, buying local is crucial to the community. Many local consumers don’t see the return like local business owners.
One perfect example is Lewiston RV, a local RV dealership that sells new and pre- owned travel trailers, toy haulers, and 5th wheels, along with offering parts and service.
I sat down and discussed the rise of Lewiston RV with co-owner Norman Van Ness. He explained how important it is to buy local in such a tight knit community. He also explained his business philosophy when it comes to taking care of his customers.
Van Ness started working at Lewiston RV 20 years ago in the year 2000, he started off on the sales lot. He truly started at the bottom and worked all the way up to the role he’s in today.
“I’ve seen every aspect of the business,” Van Ness said. “I started on the sales lot, finance manager, assistant manager, general manager and in 2014, he and Dan Bundy became co-owners of the business.”
Van Ness and his partner take pride in supporting their local community, and the term “the customer is always right” truly rings true at Lewiston RV.
“When customers come in, we try our very best to make it an enjoyable experience,” Van Ness said. “That’s what we think about while we’re hiring our sales, parts, and service people as well,” he added.
While hiring salespeople, Van Ness doesn’t look for sales experience - he looks at personality.
“I want to hire people who are personable, fun, energetic, true people’s people,” Van Ness said.
“I also prefer people that don’t have sales experience so they don’t have any old habits from another dealership,” he added.
This is one of the reasons many customers enjoy the buying experience that Lewiston RV provides.
When asked to explain what it means to buy locally – Van Ness explained that when you buy from a local dealership your money will go straight into the community. Lewiston RV has supported over 50 of the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley's events, organizations and foundations.
“I believe all the dealerships have a responsibility to give back to the community,” he said.
“Everyone in the valley can relate to all the local nonprofits and organizations, which makes it super important to give back to the community.”
Van Ness wants you to know when you buy with Lewiston RV you’re helping the community in return. Lewiston RV wants local business, so if there is something specific you are looking for, Van Ness hopes you will let them attempt to find it for you before you go elsewhere.
“We provide trailers that are made specifically for the kind of camping that we do around this area, and at all price points and floor plans to fit your needs and budget, so that you don’t have to go shopping somewhere else,” Van Ness said.
“I think it’s important for people to understand when you buy from a local dealership your money stays in the community,” he said. “We’re going to take care of you; we want to have you as our customer for years to come, so we’ll work hard to keep you as our customer.”
