Fire Update | Northeast Washington Fire Information

The Colfax Fire, Manning Fire and Babb’s/Malden Fire started on Monday, September 7th. 

Today’s weather is expected to be clear with SW winds 6-7 mph and temperatures reaching near 88.

Last Night’s Operations:

  • Manning Fire: Operations focused on patrol and mop up of any hotspots.
  • Babbs/Malden Fire: Crews continued to patrol the town of Malden and Pine City.

Today’s Operations:

  • Manning Fire: Engine crews will continue to build and strengthen control lines. Mop operations and identification of hotspots will continue. Crews have made good progress on the fire. 
  • Babbs/Malden Fire: Operations is focused on suppressing any areas with visible smoke and continue to put out hotspots within the fire perimeter. They are making continuous progress on this fire.

Safety Message: Pine City-Malden Road is currently closed from the Westside of Pine City to the Eastside of Malden. The communities of St. John, Sunset, Thornton and Ewan are at level 1 evacuations. Please refer to the Whitman County Sheriff’s Facebook page for more information on closures and evacuations.

Cause: Under Investigation

Estimated Size: 5 acres

Destroyed Structures: 3 single family residences and 1 shop


Manning Fire

Containment: 25%

Cause: Under Investigation

Estimated Size: 3063 acres

Destroyed Structures: 3 single family residences, 1 other structure and 1 historical bridge was burnt and destroyed.


Babb/Malden Fire

Containment: 0%

Cause: Under Investigation

Estimated Size: 17,781 acres

Damaged Structures: 4 single family residences

Destroyed Structures: 121 single family residences, 8 commercial properties and 94 other structures
