April 12, 2021

Every year on April 12, Americans celebrate National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day, one of America's favorite comfort foods. According to food historians, cultures have enjoyed their own versions of cooked bread with melted cheese since ancient times. The U.S. version of this delicious meal originated back in the 1920s.

Sliced bread and cheese were readily available to the public in the 20s, so American's everywhere began combining the two and grilling them together. United States government cookbooks describe Navy cooks broiling “American cheese filling sandwiches” during World War II.

The meal spread like wildfire, as grilled cheese sandwiches are versatile, depending on the type of cheese, bread, vegetables, meats, etc. There is a whole bevy of recipes for this tasty treat.
