Update on The Leland Complex Fire

Idaho Department of Lands

Leland Complex Fire is composed of the Sand Mountain Fire which is 2.5 miles east of Laird Park in Latah County, Idaho, which is 0% contained. As well as, the Pine Creek Fire 2.5 miles east of Juliaetta, Idaho, which is 50% contained. Together the fires have burned about 1,410 acres.

The fire is being commanded by Type 3 North Idaho Incident Management Team with about 150 emergency personnel on hand.

The Sand Mountain Fire:

Yesterday fire officials were able to conduct a reconnaissance flight to get a better size up of the fire and to determine the safest points to directly engage ground forces. Not only is safety important, but the probability of success determines how resources are applied in this time of resource scarcity. Resource availability will continue to be problematic as the Northern Rockies is in Preparedness Level 5 (PL5).

The fire is burning on US Forest Service and State Endowment lands. No structures are threatened. An area closure is in place for firefighters and public safety.

Pine Creek Fire:

With minimal fire activity including creeping and smoldering, the fire entered the mop-up, monitor, and patrol stage. Interior pockets of fuels are still producing some smoke. Backhaul of unnecessary equipment and supplies has begun allowing for resources to shift to Sand Mountain. Patrol and monitoring will continue by the incident management team until the fire is declared out.

Key Message:

Fire managers are aware of the recreation value of the Sand Mountain area and the private property on the area’s lease lots. As conditions moderate, and is safe to do so, officials will work to open access to lessees.

Evacuations and Closures:

Firefighters and public safety remain the number one priority. The public is asked to comply with all restrictions in place. The Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests’ Palouse Ranger District has issued a forest closure order for the area around the Sand Mountain Fire- including Laird Park. Details of trail, road, and campground closures can be found here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/.../nezperceclearwater/notices/...

Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR):

There is a TFR in place for air space over the Leland Complex fires. Remember that temporary flight restrictions also apply to unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) or drones. If you Fly, We Can’t!
