Kamiah Photographer Turning A Passion Into A Lifestyle

Benjamin Dunning's Story

MOSCOW – Kamiah local and senior at the University of Idaho Benjamin Dunning is a natural-born photographer with a creative eye for the world.

Dunning found his passion for photography at a young age when his father gave him his old camera from the ’70s. He realized he could capture images in a larger depth of field and show his friends and family how he saw the world. As Dunning got older, he realized that he had a different approach than other individuals that would take photos.

“When someone asks me to take a picture, I won’t just stand there,” said Dunning. “I will get down on a knee, lay on my belly, do whatever it takes to get a creative angle”.

During college, Dunning realized he could make his passion a lifestyle. He started by taking to the streets of Moscow, Walmart camera in hand, going to various businesses to find work. As he grew, he was able to get better equipment, improving his photos.

“I can visualize my growth,” said Dunning. “I get my equipment from what I have done, then I take better photos and use the profits to get better gear. It is an endless cycle of improvement”.

Dunning has shown just how hard he is willing to work to grow his business over the last three years. He is a full-time student, works part-time at U of I’s technical support office, and is the president of his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi. Despite all of this, he still makes ample amount of time to take new photos whether it be for clients or to grow his platform.

Now that he has photographed a mix of genres, Dunning has found he has an eye for anything that goes fast. Although he now mostly focuses on action sports and anything automotive, he still loves occasionally photographing individuals. Dunning mentioned it is overwhelmingly powerful to capture raw emotions on a person’s face.

Currently, Dunning is spending the summer in Nevada capturing videos and photos of the work his brother is putting into starting his own company. Then, in about a year or two Dunning will make the permanent move down and peruse his dreams of being an off-road digital creator.

“I want to be one of the industry-leading off-road content creators in the northwest,” said Dunning. “I have the means to do it, I just have to keep pushing myself”.
