Collision on Levee Bypass Leaves One Hospitalized

Lewiston Police Department

LEWISTON -- On Monday, September 27, at approximately 5:08 p.m., Lewiston Police Officers and Lewiston Medics were called to a motor vehicle accident in the 300 block of Levee Bypass Road. Notes indicated a pick-up and a small car were involved and were possibly a head-on collision.

Upon arrival, officers found two vehicles on the Northside of the roadway. The vehicles involved were a white, 2004 Ford, F-250 pick-up, and a tan, 2001 Hyundai Elantra. Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, officers determined that the driver of the Hyundai Elantra had been traveling Eastbound on Levee Bypass and had crossed the center line as it went around the curve near the Confluence into the Westbound (opposite) lane of traffic.

The vehicle then swerved back into the eastbound lane of traffic, nearly hitting some concrete barriers. The Hyundai driver appeared to over-correct at this point, and the vehicle swerved back into the Westbound lanes into on-coming traffic but began to skid sideways.

The driver of the Ford pick-up tried to swerve to avoid the Hyundai that was in his lane of travel but was unable to and the front end of the pick-up struck the passenger side of the Hyundai in the Westbound lane of traffic before they both came to rest on the shoulder and grassy area of Levee Bypass.

The driver and sole occupant of the Hyundai were transported via ambulance to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver of the pick-up who was the only occupant was uninjured. Airbags were deployed on both vehicles.

The Lewiston Police Department's Major Collision Investigation Team (MCIT) was called to the scene to investigate. The names of the drivers are not being released at this time until notifications to family members can be made. Speed appears to be a factor in this crash.

This is the second serious collision the Lewiston Police Department has responded to on Levee Bypass in the last four days. Lewiston PD wants to remind everyone to slow down, go the speed limit, pay attention to the roadway and wear their seatbelts. If anyone has information on this collision and has not spoken to Lewiston Police, please contact Sgt. Craig Roberts at 208-746-0171 and reference case number 21-L14910.
