Burglary Suspect arrested after SWAT Standoff

HARRISON - On Wednesday, November 17 at around 8:10 p.m. the Kootenai County 911 Center received a call from a homeowner in the Gotham Bay area reporting a possible burglary in progress at his residence.

The homeowner was able to see a suspect and vehicle on his security cameras. Several Deputies responded to the area & one

Deputy located the vehicle on Gotham Bay Road heading towards Hwy 97. The Deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, however, it failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated.

During the pursuit, the suspect stopped in the roadway. The Deputy exited his vehicle and began giving commands for the suspect to exit the vehicle. At this time the suspect rammed the patrol vehicle, disabling it. The suspect then continued towards Hwy 97.

As more Deputies arrived in the area they located the suspect vehicle behind a locked gate to another property.

Deputies were able to see the suspect still in the driver’s seat. Commands were given, however, the suspect refused to follow commands or exit the vehicle.

While Deputies were trying to communicate with the suspect, it was learned a firearm was stolen from the residence. As a result of the pursuit, the failure to follow commands, and a firearm was stolen, the Joint Agency SWAT team was requested to the scene.

After an hour's standoff, the suspect was taken into custody. During the arrest, the suspect sustained some minor injuries due to a K-9 bite. No Deputies were injured in the incident.

The suspect was identified as Justin A. Klauba, a 38-year-old male from Post Falls, Idaho. Klauba was arrested and charged with felony malicious injury to property, felony burglary, felony eluding, and resisting arrest. Klauba has no prior criminal history in Kootenai County.
