High Avalanche Threat in the Area

Friends of the Payette Avalanche Center

Considerable avalanche hazard exists today. Stiff wind slabs still exist in middle and upper elevation terrain features. These avalanches could be large to very large. The sun will be in full effect today. Watch for wet loose avalanches on south-facing slopes in all elevations.

The natural avalanche in these photos was observed in the Lick creek zone yesterday Saturday, January 8. On a NE aspect at about 7400'. It was rated as a HS-N-R3-D2.5-s. It likely ran sometime between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. The hard wind slab likely initiated a larger, softer storm slab further down the slope.
