Franklin County – State fire assistance has been mobilized under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan in support of local firefighters working to contain the Sulphur Fire located along Highway 260 in Franklin County, between the towns of Kahlotus and Connell. 

Whitman County Sheriff's Office offers Boater Education Course

Colfax — On August 13th and 14th, 2019 — The Whitman County Sheriff's Office will offer a free mandatory boater education course for Washington boaters. This 7 hour course will provide boaters the basics of safe boating that all recreational boaters should know. This course was developed specifically for the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission and is taught by Deputy John Giudice.

Undersheriff Jody Brown warns:

The Asotin County Sheriff’s Office wants to make citizens aware of a scam that recently took $22,800 from an unsuspecting citizen here in Asotin County.

The scam is done through Facebook via Instant Messenger. The victim receives a notification from a “friend” that tells them they “just received a grant for $100,000 and its legitimate”. The scammer then instructs them on how to get this grant by sending money to an account at Wells Fargo Bank along with.....

COLFAX, WA- On July 25th at approximately 1:30 pm, a citizen reported a disabled vehicle on Senator Eugene Prince Road near State Route 195. The vehicle was described as a gold colored minivan.

A deputy responded and contacted John R Shumate (55 years old) of Spokane. Shumate was taken into custody for an out of county misdemeanor warrant. The warrant was out of Ellensburg for a probation violation.

Man Succumbs to Injuries from crash in Grangeville

According to a press release from Idaho State Police:

On July 24th, 2019, at 10:07 am, the Idaho State Police responded to a serious injury crash involving a logging truck and a motorcycle.

Nicholas R. Bendawald, 39, of Emmett, Idaho, was northbound on US95 near the intersection of SH13 driving a 1997 Kenworth tractor pulling a loaded 2011 Lincoln trailer.  Frederic J. Smith, 69, of Anacortes, Washington was westbound on SH13, driving a black and maroon 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Smith was traveling with a group of other riders when the first rider pulled out onto southbound US95 from westbound SH13, Smith followed onto southbound US95 pulling out in front of Bendawald. 

Bendawald attempted to stop but was unable to, striking Smith.  An off duty Meridian Fire Deputy Chief Fire Marshall was traveling through the area and arrived on scene, administering life saving measures to Smith.  Smith was transported to Syringa General Hospital in Grangeville where he was then flown to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. Smith was wearing a helmet and Bendawald was wearing a seatbelt.  The roadway was blocked for approximately 3.5 hours.  The Idaho Transportation Department assisted with traffic rerouting during that time.  Investigation continuing.

****Update - Fredric Smith passed away this morning (7/25/2019) at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
