ASOTIN COUNTY, WA – The burn season may be open, but there are still rules that must be followed.  On the first day of open burning yesterday the Asotin County Fire District responded to a fire on Highland Avenue at 7:37 pm.  It turned out to be a yard waste burn long after the burn hours were closed.  Firefighters headed to the same address again after midnight because it was still smoldering.

Work Starts On Winchester Grade Passing Lane

WINCHESTER, ID – The passing lane up Winchester Grade is going to be three miles longer soon.  Work is just beginning on Highway 95 as contractors replace signs and guardrails in preparation for construction to extend the extra lane in the canyon.

For the next month work will be mostly on the shoulders of the roadway.  During the early construction, one lane will be open in each direction during the day and weekends.

NEZ PERCE COUNTY, ID – Deputies took a man to jail after he was seen spinning donuts, power-braking, and rolling his pickup with his 4-year-old son inside.

Friday afternoon a witness called 911 to let deputies know he saw a red pickup in the in the parking lot of Mann Lake.  The witness told dispatchers what he’d seen and that there may have been two people inside the vehicle that drove off the embankment and rolled at least once into the dry lakebed, landing on its tires.

Fuel Truck Accident Spills 1,200 Gallons

POWELL, ID – A fuel truck went off the road and leaked 1200 gallons of gas into a drainage ditch that connects to the Lochsa River.  Just before 6:30 Friday morning the Idaho State Police responded to the crash on Highway 12 at milepost 163 near Powell, ID.  The truck, driven by Gary G. Claussen of Missoula, MT, was headed westbound when it went off the road for an unknown reason. 

Nez Perce Tourism Grand Opening

LEWISTON, ID – Nez Perce Tourism officially opened its doors today.  The Discovery Center at Hells Gate Park hosted the grand opening celebration at noon.

The event had a traditional ribbon cutting, but more traditionally, it hosted drummers, dancers, and cultural experts who told stories about the Nimiipuu. 

Former WSU Student Convicted of 2nd Degree Rape

COLFAX, WA – A former WSU student faces jail time for 2nd Degree Rape.  A jury found 23-year-old Thomas L. Culhane guilty yesterday of both rape and Furnishing Liquor To Minors. 

The convictions come from an incident at his apartment in August of 2017.  A press release from the Prosecutor’s office says Culhane hosted the small party where he served liquor and marijuana to his guests. 

Kamiah Fire Destroys Home

KAMIAH, ID – Kamiah firefighters rushed to a home fire yesterday.  At 12:30 pm, they were called to a motor home that was on fire in a mobile home park in the 200 block of Pine Street.  The home is a total loss, but the fire department was able to keep the fire from spreading to any nearby homes.

OLYMPIA, WA – If you see flags at half-staff in Washington today, it’s in honor of a fallen Deputy.  Kittitas County Sheriff’s Deputy Ryan Thompson was killed in the line of duty on March 19th.  His funeral is today.
