House Republicans kill bill for a $6 million federal preschool grant

The House killed a bill Tuesday to allow the State Board of Education to receive nearly $6 million in federal grants to support early childhood education across the state over three years.

Following a lengthy morning floor debate, the House voted 36-34 against House Bill 226. The bill was a supplemental appropriation bill to provide money from the Federal Preschool Development Grant to the State Board.

LEWISTON, Idaho– Lewis-Clark State College will host both a men’s and women’s tournament as part of the 2020-21 NAIA Basketball National Championship Opening Rounds. Per NAIA and local guidelines, spectators will be allowed on a limited basis for the contests on March 12 and 13.

400 spectators will be permitted in the Activity Center for each game of the tournaments. Times are set for noon, 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. both days. The women’s games will be played at noon and 5:30 p.m., and the men at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be valid for single games only, and the Activity Center will be cleared after each contest.

Within the last 2 months, fish and game replaced two out of three damaged portable toilets; one toilet was burned along the Clearwater at McGill hole near Orofino, another toilet was pushed in to the S. Fork of the Clearwater River near mailbox hole and the third was shot multiple times along the S. Fork Clearwater River.

AHSAHKA, Idaho – In order to meet flood control targets for March and April, Dworshak Dam will be decreasing releases starting Friday night, March 5, at midnight. This decrease will result in the river lowering less than 1 foot over the hour between midnight on Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday morning.

The Republican “Open Safe, Open Now” plan returns decision-making authority to local officials, ending top-down state mandates. It requires all school districts in Washington to resume in-person instruction and opens all business activity in the state to 50% capacity, with 100% capacity possible within three weeks.

Over the last several months, the Nez Perce County Prosecutor’s Office, YWCA, and Idaho Animal Rescue Network have been working jointly on a program to assist domestic violence victims who remain with their abuser out of concern for their pets. The confidential program allows for victims of domestic violence to leave their abusers and have a safe place for their animals to stay while they work with the YWCA on housing.

BOISE, ID - Idaho has taken aim at abortion in the past and is doing so again, as this week a bill aimed at defunding abortion providers passed the Idaho House 52-17. The bill will now make its way to the Senate. 

“This bill strips any provider of abortion services of any state funding. This does not outlaw any abortions,” Rep. Bryan Zollinger, R-Idaho Falls, told the House on Tuesday. Zollinger is also the bill's sponsor.

SEATTLE — As a result of a lawsuit brought by Attorney General Bob Ferguson, 39 other attorneys general and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), two national companies that made more than 1.7 million robocalls for sham charities into Washington state will pay $495,000 to help fund legitimate charities. One company has since gone out of business and today’s lawsuit requires another one to dissolve.
