LEWISTON, ID – Clarkston Sophomore Tori Blewett earned the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Lewis Clark Valley’s 2019 Youth of the Year award.  Blewett, Jessica Schumacher, a Lewiston 8th grade student,  and Tarriq Wells, a Lapwai Sophomore were all nominated for the award.  Blewett now goes to the Washington State Competition in Seattle next month.

ASOTIN COUNTY, WA – The volunteers of Asotin County Fire District #1 responded to more than 1,500 calls last year.  The fire department is made up of volunteers, most of whom also have full-time jobs.  They stopped what they were doing to respond to 251 major incidents and more than 1,200 medical calls in the district in 2018.

BOISE, ID – Police Officers, Troopers, and Deputies could soon have a new tool to help catch people who hurt or kill law enforcement officers.  A bill for the Blue Alert System made headway in the Idaho Legislature last week.  If an officer of the law is seriously threatened, hurt, or missing, or killed, the system allows for a quick dissemination of information.

OROFINO, ID - Divers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation are helping the Orofino Police Departemnt look for a murder weapon.  Orofino Police served a search warrant at 12358 Hartford Avenue.  They got a tip that the firearm used to kill Samantha Fignani in May 2017 may be in a pond at that address.

BOISE, ID – If you have already filed your taxes, you’re ahead of the game, but don’t count on a quick refund.  The State of Idaho and the IRS both start processing tax returns on Monday.  The State of Idaho Tax Commission is sending out a reminder that all Idaho tax returns go through fraud-detection reviews and accuracy checks before issuing a refund.  They may ask you to verify your identity or to provide more information.

Proposed Bill Outlaws Studded Tires

OLYMPIA, WA – Studded snow tires could be illegal if some Washington legislators get their way.  House Bill 1309 would make selling and eventually using snow tires against the law.  The bill would immediately increase the state fee from five dollars to $100 per studded tire.  January 1st, 2020 it would become illegal to sell the tires or sell studs to put in the tires.  On July 1st 2025 it would become illegal to use any tires you may still have with metal studs.  The penalty cited in the bill is $500 for use on public property.

Man Tackles, Woman Punches LPD Officer Trying To Prevent A Fight

LEWISTON, ID – Two people allegedly attacked an LPD officer early Saturday morning at a Lewiston bar.  The officer responded to reports of a citizen dispute at Canter’s Inn at about 2:09 am.  A press release says eight to ten people were in the parking lot engaged in a citizen dispute.  It goes on to say the officer tried to remove the primary aggressor, 22-year-old Lewiston Resident Kade Mago, from the group.  The release then says Mago tackled the LPD officer, who then struck his head on the pavement.

ANATONE, WA – It won’t cost you anything to visit Fields Spring State Park or any other Washington State Park.  Normally you would need a day pass or a Discover Pass to park and access the trails.  Today, the holiday celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, is one of two January days that is free.
