Nez Perce Tribe, Washington, & Idaho Receive Share of $32.6 Million in Historic Preservation Grants

WASHINGTON, DC - The National Park Service today announced the awarding of $26.9 million in historic preservation grants to every US state, the District of Columbia, the US territories, and partnering nations, in addition to $5.7 million in grants to more than 160 tribes for cultural and heritage preservation projects on their tribal lands.  Locally, the Nez Perce Tribe was granted $41,258; Idaho received $449,517; and Washington received $496,530.

Forests Damaged by Fire Near Kamiah Were Treated to Prevent Bark Beetle Infestation

KAMIAH, ID - More than 600 acres of forested state lands affected by the 2015 wildfires near Kamiah were treated to prevent infestations of bark beetles.  Idaho Department of Lands and US Forest Service officials stapled 7,300 bubble caps filled with a pheromone produced by Douglas-fir beetles to trees throughout and adjacent to burned areas to prevent mortality in healthy stands of trees.

Drug Take-Back Day is Saturday

LEWISTON, ID - Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies will take part in the annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  The public can dispose of their unused and unwanted prescription medications at one of the 180 collection sites in the Pacific Northwest, operated by 153 local law enforcement agencies and other community partners. The service is free of charge, no questions asked.

AG Ferguson: Former Corinthian College Students Eligible for Federal Student Loan Cancellation

OLYMPIA, WA - Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson is reaching out to notify thousands of Washingtonians who attended schools operated by Corinthian Colleges, Incorporated that they are eligible for cancellation of their federal student loans.  Approximately 5,700 Washington residents who attended programs at Corinthian schools are eligible for streamlined federal student loan cancellation.

Personal-Use Firewood Permits For Umatilla National Forest Go on Sale Monday

PENDLETON, OR - Personal-use firewood permits for the Umatilla National Forest will go on sale Monday at several local vendors and at Forest Service offices.  They can be purchased for $5 per cord with a minimum purchase of four cords for $20.  The maximum limit for personal-use firewood on the Umatilla National Forest is 12-cords-per-household-per-year.

"Large-Scale Drug Trafficker" Sentenced in US District Court

COEUR D'ALENE, ID - A 35-year-old "large-scale drug trafficker" was sentenced this week in US District Court for distributing methamphetamine and heroin.  Under a plea agreement, Hugo Chavez Acevedo of Pullman was sentenced to 12 years in prison followed by five years of probation.

"The defendant agreed, as a part of a plea agreement, that he was responsible for distributing between 15 and 45 kilograms of methamphetamine," according to court records.

“Healthy Soils Are Full of Life” School Poster Contest Winners Are Announced

CULDESAC, ID - The Nez Perce County Soil and Water Conservation District has chosen this year’s top 10 poster contest winners. The District received over 500 submissions from area 5th and 6th graders that illustrated the theme, “Healthy Soils Are Full of Life.”  Schools from Clarkston, Asotin, Lewiston, and Culdesac participated, with 1st place going to Jocelyn Lemanski of Camelot Elementary.
