WSU demolished the visiting Northern Colorado Bears this past Saturday 59-17, but the sentiment by the team after the game was that the "defense needed some cleaning up", ahead of Wazzu's matchup against Houston. The cougs' offense started the game off right with 3-straight TDs on their first 3 posessions of the game, with an average drive duration of 2:19; not bad! However, the cougs would end the first half with a 24-10 lead over the clearly overmatched Bears.
The second half had a much different energy to it, and it seemed as though Wazzu was annoyed that the Bears were still hanging around. WSU proceeded to outscore Northern Colorado 35-7 in the second half, and the defense really seemed to tighten things up along the way as well.
Anthony Gordon had another impressive day, with 464 yards passing, and 4 TDs, with only 1 INT. Gordon already nearly has 1,000 passing yards through his first 2 career starts, and 9 TDs vs. his one INT. He'll face his first true test however this coming Saturday against Houston.
During the press conference after the game Leach and some of his defensive players, (Jahad Woods, Justus Rodgers, and Lamonte Mcdougal), all thought they needed to do a better job of tackling, keeping containment, and not over-running plays. The cougs didn't do much blitzing during their first two games this season, so it'll be interesting to see if defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys will dial up the pressure as the team prepares for their first road test against the Houston Cougars.
Keep your eyes out for our preview of WSU vs. Houston later this week, but here's a sneak peak! The cougars will DEFINITELY win the game this Saturday! Get it? I'll let you think about it.
