PULLMAN, WA - Max Borghi guaranteed a victory over the Beavers following the Cougs second conference win of the year against Stanford. A trip to a bowl game is on the line against the second ranked team in the Pac-12 north. We'll see if Borghi's guarantee will motivate Washington State or curse them.
Where the Beavers have thrived is where the Cougs have struggled - four of Oregon State's five victoires have came inside the conference. The Cougs won its second conference game of the season just last week against Stanford 49-22. Its only other conference victory came against Colorado in week seven 41-10.
Not only has Oregon State won four of its last six conference games, they've also won three of their last four games. The Beavers also are one of the best pass rushing teams in the Pac-12 - they lead the conference in tackles for a loss. The offense has also figured out what works against each of its opponents - coming in as one of the best game planning teams in the Pac-12. Jake Luton has put together excellent performances for the Beavers in the last three weeks - averaging eight yards per pass. He's racked up 2300 yards and 23 touchdowns along with only two interceptions. It's been a balanced attack in Beaverton, Jermar Jefferson has been the bellcow for the Beavers. He's racked up 472 yards on 101 carries averaging 4.7 yards per carry. The Beavers have a very balanced attack only needing one victory to go bowling for the first time since 2013.
However, the Cougs have a chance to keep its bowl streak alive - its been bowling every year since 2015. This season for Wazzu has fell flat for the fans after its best regular season in program history a year ago. They won 11 games last year, this year they only have five victories under their belt. If they win this game it'll mean Wazzu is going bowling, if not it'll come down the Apple Cup a game the Cougs haven't won since 2012. So this game is very important for Wazzu's chances to go to a bowl game in December.
Mike Leach's air raid offense has turned another quarterback into a superstar, Anthony Gordon is coming off of a game where he had 520 passing yards and five touchdowns. Despite the Beavers pass rushers, its secondary hasn't helped the defense much. It gives up a lot of big plays, which is what this WSU's offense is built off of. The Cougs have only lost games this year when they turn the ball over more than once. Oregon State's defense has only five interceptions on the season.
This game comes down to which offense makes the fewest mistakes - It should be a shoot out between two teams that have a lot to play for. Essentially both of these teams need to win this game in order to go bowling - both teams have difficult games to end the season. The Beavers got the Oregon Ducks and the Cougs got the Huskies.
